World Book Day: The Next Generation of Authors

Since then, for the last 26 years, they have continued to inspire young people to engage with reading and literature. Every year, we see children dressing up as their favourite characters to celebrate World Book Day!

World Book Day continues to make a monumental impact in reconnecting children and young people with reading and literature. They have the figures to back it up:

• 96.9% of children have heard of World Book Day and children who participate in World Book Day activities are more engaged in reading and books than those who don’t.

• 70% of early years settings and 77% of primary schools said World Book Day is effective in fostering a reading for pleasure culture.

• 59% of primary school children find reading more fun as a result of World Book Day. (Source)

With the young population reconnecting with reading in such a powerful way, will we have a generation of storytellers, writers and authors? Perhaps, when young people are shown the worth of stories and books, they will feel more connected with literature and have the confidence to pursue this from a young age.

We want to recognise the impact World Book Day should have on adults too. As we celebrate reading for pleasure, we should also empower people to feel confident to share their stories.
